March 21, 2026 - NOAA Key Messages for March Western U.S. Heat.

Rare, widespread record-breaking temperatures continue through next week.

Unusual Early Spring Heat Wave
A rare March heat wave is ongoing, resulting in much above-normal temperatures to the Southwest. Temperatures will be 20° to 35° above normal, with afternoon highs well into the 90s and 100s. Widespread daily temperature records are expected through this weekend, with many locations setting their highest March temperatures on record and their earliest 100° day.

Heat Risk for Vulnerable Populations
The early time of year, prolonged nature of this heat wave, and limited seasonal acclimation will increase the risk of heat impacts especially among sensitive populations or those without effective cooling. Adjust plans to limit strenuous outdoor activities to early morning hours, drink plenty of fluids, and seek air conditioned spaces.

Snowmelt/River Hazards
Rapid snowmelt due to the heat will cause river rises resulting in swift currents on nearby rivers. While air temperatures are warm, water temperatures remain dangerously cold. Anyone entering the water is at risk of cold water shock and hypothermia.
