Be Cautious Around Waterways in Tuolumne County
March 28, 2026 – Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office officials announce that as the weather warms up, please remember that local waterways will remain cold, fast-moving, and higher than normal well into the summer months.
A warm, beautiful day does not mean rivers, streams, and swimming holes are safe. Help keep yourself and your loved ones safe—and help keep our swift-water rescue teams out of harm’s way.
Plan Ahead
- Share your location and expected return time with someone you trust and check in when you return safely.
- Consider bringing a satellite communication device, as cell service is often limited in forested areas. In an emergency, your phone may not work.
Stay Cautious Around the Water
- Cold, fast-moving water can be dangerous—even for strong swimmers. Hazards include:
- Powerful currents
- Hidden underwater obstacles
- Cold-water shock, which can cause involuntary gasping and lead to drowning
- Do not enter the water to attempt a rescue. Instead, throw a flotation device and call emergency services.
- Never go alone, and always wear a life jacket when recreating in or near waterways.
Watch Children Closely
- Always supervise children around water with your full, undivided attention. Never assume someone else is watching them.
- Teach children how to stay safe by:
- Wearing life jackets
- Understanding river currents and cold-water risks
- Being aware of underwater hazards and changing conditions
Staying alert and prepared can make all the difference. Enjoy the outdoors safely this season.
