September 1, 2016 - SONORA, California – Campgrounds, trails and recreation sites are open on the Stanislaus National Forest this Labor Day weekend, but visitors are reminded to be “beetle aware” to the dangers from drought and bark beetle impacted trees.
Trees in the forest are being impacted by the fifth year of a drought and unprecedented bark beetle infestations and can fall unexpectedly. We ask the public to keep in mind these points while recreating in the forest:
- BEWARE of broken limbs and damaged trees that may fall at any time.
- LOOK UP while in the forest, especially when it’s windy, and be aware of your surroundings.
- USE CAUTION and pitch tents and park vehicles away from trees and avoid spur roads.
- FOLLOW fire restriction orders and make sure your campfire is completely out.
- KNOW your escape routes in the event of an emergency.
Wildfires continue to burn throughout California and much of the state remains at high risk for wildfires. The Stanislaus National Forest is under fire restrictions in the High and Moderate Hazard Areas. Map and Forest Order is available on the forest website, www.fs.usda.gov/stanislaus.
