March 31, 2026 - SONORA, California – To provide for public safety, Jason Kuiken, Forest Supervisor for the Stanislaus National Forest has issued a Forest Order that will temporarily close a portion of Forest Service Road No. 1N04 (Cottonwood Road) from March 30, 2026, through May 18, 2026, implementing a closure of Forest Road No. 1N04 (Cottonwood Road) from the intersection with Forest Road 2N13 to the Clavey River Bridge.

The reason for the closure is to accommodate the road repair work for the Central Federal Lands Cottonwood Road/2N14/3N01 project. This full closure extends to emergency vehicles due to the potential need to excavate the full road width. However, the need to have both lanes of traffic excavated will be minimized and will allow access for emergency vehicles when possible.
The closure area encompasses two sites that were damaged in early 2023 atmospheric river storms. Both sites experienced significant fill slope failures that will require construction of mechanically stabilized earth walls to repair.
This order will be in effect until repairs are complete. If the Forest determines that the area is safe for public use, the order may be partially or wholly terminated prior to May 18, 2025.
