April 2, 2026 - Sonora, Calif. – On Monday, Tuolumne County District Attorney’s Office announced the filing and conviction
statistics for the first half of the 2025-2026 grant year of their DUI Prosecution Unit. The DUI Prosecution Unit was created in October 2024, and funded by a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).
The statistics for October 1, 2025 through March 31, 2026 are as follows:
- DUI Cases Reviewed: 243
- DUI Cases Filed: 226
- DUI Convictions: 130
- Wet Reckless Convictions: 24
One note when looking at these statistics is that from the time of filing to the time of conviction, there are often multiple court appearances that occur between that time. Thus, the reported conviction statistics are not reflective only of the cases filed during that reported period. For example, cases filed during this reporting period are likely still open and pending court proceedings.
During the last six months, the DUI Unit Prosecutor attended a Vehicular Homicide Symposium hosted by the California District Attorney Association, attended the Sonora Police Department’s DUI Checkpoint, as well as assisted the Traffic Safety Resource Prosecution Network with a training in Stanislaus County, that was attended by multiple local law enforcement officers. The prosecutor also responded to the scene of a DUI crash causing injury at the request of the California Highway Patrol.
The DUI Prosecution Unit is currently staffed by one experienced prosecutor from the District Attorney’s Office. The program is currently funded through September 2026.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The DUI Prosecution Unit would like to remind everyone that drinking and driving endangers everyone on the roadways, and the safest option is always to designate a sober driver.
