Scam Alert – Rideshare Courier Scam

April 7, 2026 – Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office officials are warning residents about an emerging scam targeting Calaveras County Sheriff logothe elderly community.

Scammers are contacting victims by phone, posing as law enforcement, bank officials, or even family members in distress. They create a sense of urgency and instruct victims to withdraw large amounts of cash. Victims are then told to place the money in an envelope or package, which is picked up by a rideshare driver and delivered to unknown suspect(s).

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

  • Law enforcement will NEVER ask for money to be picked up or delivered, especially using a rideshare service.
  • Do not hand cash or valuables to any courier or driver. Suspects may claim an “agent” or “delivery service” will come directly to your home to collect money.
  • Suspects may attempt to “walk” you through the process and remain on the phone while you withdraw cash.
  • Be cautious of urgent requests demanding secrecy.
  • Always verify by contacting a trusted family member or your local law enforcement agency.
  • Be aware that suspects can use “spoofed” phone numbers that appear legitimate on the caller ID to gain your trust.
  • Suspects will often pressure you to act immediately.

If you or a loved one receives a suspicious call, do not comply. Contact the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office immediately at 209-754-6500. In case of an emergency, dial 9-1-1.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office encourages all residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. Please share this information and check in on elderly family members, friends, and neighbors.
