Burn Permits Required May 1, 2026 

April 24, 2026 - Mariposa, CA – The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit (MMU) has announced effective 8:00 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2026, all hazard reduction burning will require a CAL FIRE burn permit in Eastern Madera County, Mariposa County, and the State Responsibility Area (SRA) of Merced County.

Residents wishing to burn MUST have a valid permit starting May 1, 2026, and verify it's a permissive burn day prior to burning. Residents must adhere to the conditions of the permit. Burning outside the perimeters of the permit may result in a citation.

  • Eastern Madera County
    San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control burn day information line: 877-429-2876. Residential burn permits can be obtained by visiting burnpermit.fire.ca.gov.
  • Merced County
    Agriculture (Ag) Burning in LRA is allowed. Burn permits for Ag burns are available through San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control (209) 557-6400.

Residential burning is allowed for residents who live in the State Responsibility Area (SRA) only. Residential burning is not allowed in the Local Response Area (LRA). Residential burn permits are available online by visiting burnpermit.fire.ca.gov.

Residential Burn permits are available online by visiting burnpermit.fire.ca.gov.

Burning is limited to grass, brush, down trees and limbs and dead, dry vegetation. Residents burning outside permit parameters could be cited.
