High-Country Health Food and Cafe in Mariposa California

April 29, 2026 - Merced County is inviting residents to take part in a community-wide effort to name the County’s newest public art merced county bearfeature—a towering wood-carved bear sculpture located in Courthouse Park.

Community members can submit their name ideas online.

Participants are asked to include their name, phone number, and email address with their submission. All entries will be reviewed, and names will be voted on by an internal County committee. The winning entry will be recognized by the Merced County Board of Supervisors.

The bear sculpture was created by local wood carver Tommy McCarty Jr. of Dos Palos, who transformed the redwood tree stump into a beautifully detailed piece of art. The tree, which had become diseased, was removed from Courthouse Park for safety reasons. Rather than discarding it, the County saw an opportunity to repurpose the stump into a meaningful and lasting addition to the park.

“This project reflects our commitment to enhancing the County's public spaces,” said Supervisor Josh Pedrozo, whose District 2 includes Courthouse Park. “We’re excited to give residents the opportunity to help name this unique symbol of Merced County.”

Residents are encouraged to submit their ideas and be part of this fun and engaging community initiative. Submissions will be accepted through May 31, 2026.
