May 9, 2026 – Madera County Sheriff's Office officials issue a safety reminder to stay safe around rivers and streams.

With the warm weekend ahead, we urge the public to use extreme caution while hiking around rivers and streams. With Madera SO watersafetylocations such as Angel Falls, which are close to parking lots and trails, hikers can have a false sense of security. There are many beautiful areas to be explored, but they may not always be safe. Rocks can be extremely slippery even when they aren’t wet. The water is extremely swift, and deadly cold. One missed step can result in a serious injury or fatality.

We love our community members and those who come to Madera County to enjoy one of the most beautiful places on earth. We want you to be safe, have a great time, and be able to come back and visit again.

Stay within your abilities and take responsibility for your own safety. When hiking around the water, visitors need to be extra careful.

Immediately call 9-1-1 if someone in your party falls into deep or rough waters.

Know your location ahead of time. Screenshot your location on the map in case you lose service so you can easily access it if calling 9-1-1 is necessary.
