House Votes Here: On Agreeing to the Resolution
June 4, 2026 - WASHINGTON, DC – On Wednesday, Congressman John Garamendi (CA-08), a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Iran War Powers Resolution:
“Today House Democrats took control and passed the Iran War Powers Resolution to end Trump and Hegseth’s failed war of choice in Iran and rein in this reckless president.
“Although Trump campaigned on lower costs and ending foreign wars, since taking office, he has only jacked up the cost of everything from gas to groceries, spent tens of billions in tax-payer dollars, and put American service members in harm’s way.
“After repeated attempts by House Democrats, including introducing my own resolution, the House of Representatives finally voted to end Trump’s failed war. I urge Senate Republicans to find their spine and end the Iran war once and for all.”
President Trump’s open-ended, undefined military engagement is precisely what the War Powers Resolution was designed to prevent. This War Powers Resolution directs the President to remove U.S. forces from hostilities against Iran without a declaration of war or authorization for the use of military force (AUMF), except for those elements necessary to defend the U.S. or an ally from imminent attack. Today’s vote reaffirms the Constitutional principle that only Congress can declare war.
