Homicide Investigation in Unincorporated Modesto
June 23, 2026 – Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at approximately 3:30 p.m., deputies responded to the area of River Road and Bystrum Road in the unincorporated area of Modesto following reports of an assault involving weapons.
Upon arrival, deputies located an adult male lying on the ground with at least one apparent gunshot wound. A passerby discovered the victim and began CPR before emergency responders arrived. Despite those efforts, deputies determined the victim had sustained fatal injuries and confirmed he was deceased at the scene.
Due to the nature of the incident, detectives assigned to the Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Unit responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation. The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office Coroner's Office also responded to assist. The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
At this time, investigators have not identified a suspect, and no arrests have been made. Detectives are actively pursuing leads and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident, observed suspicious activity in the area, or has information that may assist investigators to come forward.
