Woman Arrested on Several Charges Including Elder Abuse
June 27, 2026 – Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on April 30, 2026, at about 6:48
p.m., Deputies with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office responded to a confidential address in the Salida, regarding a reported assault and vehicle theft.
Once deputies arrived, they determined that the suspect, Melanie Elizabeth Smith, a 23-year-old female from Salida, had fled the scene prior to their arrival. The investigation revealed that Smith had assaulted family members, possibly caused physical harm to her children, and had consumed alcohol before stealing a vehicle from the property.
With the assistance of the Unmmaned Aerial Systems (UAS) Unit, deputies located Smith driving the stolen vehicle in the area of Hatch Rd. and Carpenter Rd. Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but Smith refused to yield, leading to a brief vehicle pursuit. The pursuit concluded when Smith eventually stopped the vehicle near the 2300 block of Hatch Road.
During the arrest, Smith was non-compliant and was in possession of an edged weapon. Deputies deployed several less-lethal bean bag rounds and ultimately utilized K9 Sully to safely take her into custody. She was then transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and clearance.
