Fireworks Safety Message

July 4, 2026 – CAL FIRE Law Enforcement officials announce recent seizure of illegal fireworks in Merced County.

Every year, illegal fireworks put lives, homes, and our communities at risk. This recent seizure by CAL FIRE Law Enforcement in Merced County is a reminder that illegal fireworks aren’t just dangerous—they can be deadly.

Among the confiscated items were numerous illegal fireworks and what appear to be homemade destructive devices. These improvised devices are extremely unpredictable and can cause catastrophic injuries, fires, or death to anyone nearby, including the person handling them.

Remember:

Illegal fireworks are a leading cause of preventable wildfires. Homemade explosive devices are highly unstable and can detonate without warning. A single spark can destroy homes, threaten first responders, and endanger entire neighborhoods.

Possessing or manufacturing illegal fireworks or destructive devices can result in criminal charges, significant fines, and civil liability for fire suppression costs and property damage.

As we celebrate, please do your part:

  • Attend a professional fireworks display.
  • If fireworks are allowed in your community, only use those that are legal where you live and follow all safety instructions.
  • Keep water and a hose nearby.
  • Never allow children to handle fireworks.
  • Report dangerous or suspicious fireworks activity to your local law enforcement agency.

Protect your family, your neighbors, and our firefighters. No celebration is worth risking a life or starting the next wildfire.
