Coulterville Chronicle Reprints Now Available!

The
long out of print book, Coulterville Chronicle, The Annals Of A Mother Lode Mining Town is now available!  Originally printed in 1924, this book is chock full of information the author, Catherine Coffin Phillips, garnered from the “old-timers” still around in the early 1900’s, as well as from their children.  Copies are $25.95.  They are a perfect gift for your children, grandchildren or friends and will bring to life many of the stories that the historic buildings in town …or a walk through the local cemetery…only hint about.

Community Breakfast on Sunday, October 9th

Enjoy pancakes and eggs at the Old School House in Historic Coulterville, located at the corner of Broadway and Cemetery Sts.  Breakfast will be served on Sunday, October 9th from 8 to 11 a.m.  If you are not a museum member, join that morning and your meal is “on the house" and members should be sure and ask for their “discount” if they have not already taken advantage of this annual member benefit.

10 9 16 OctBkfst smBreakfast a great value - a generous serving of eggs, ham or sausage, “all-you-can-eat” pancakes, fresh fruit and beverage for only $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for children or a family “package” for $15.00 (2 adults & 2 children), and also is a fundraiser for Coulterville’s museum!  The proceeds of these monthly breakfasts are used to maintain and operate the History Center, located at the intersection of Hwys. 49 and 132 (base of the John Muir Route).

There is a free drawing for a complimentary breakfast held each month and raffle tickets for baked goodies and assorted items that you can win on the spot.  The proceeds of the October raffle will be used to benefit Dan O’Connell, who recently returned to Coulterville after suffering a stroke resulting in an extended medical stay down in Modesto.  Dan has helped the NMCHC significantly in the past year or so and now the museum is trying to give something back.  There will also be a special raffle benefitting him (winner need not be present), a two-course dinner for 2 prepared in your home by Chef Bill Mitchell.

The Breakfast Crew also needs some new folks to get involved.  If you regularly travel to Merced or Modesto, perhaps you could volunteer to be their monthly “shopper” for the few items they don’t get locally.  Or, can you give a few hours of your time to help serve and/or clean-up (don’t have to get up early to do this as the clean-up crew can arrive about 10 or 10:30 a.m.)  Please call the museum at 209-878-3015 and leave your contact information if you would be willing to get involved in this important fund raising event.

The NMCHC was established as a 501c3 charitable organization in 1976 with the History Center opening to the public in 1980.  Visited by thousands each year, including international travelers from around the world, the various displays and photos provide an authentic glimpse of the life and times of the pioneers who helped settle the area in the early 1800’s and those who traveled west during the 1849 California gold rush.  Memberships and volunteer opportunities are available.  Call 878-3015 for more information or check out CoultervilleHistoryCenter.org.

Coulterville’s 6th Annual TRUNK or TREAT HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL Saturday, the 29th!
TotT15 PU1 Coulterville’s Main Street Merchants are delighted will be hosting this year’s Trunk or Treat Halloween Festival Saturday, October 29th at 6 p.m.  This free, fun annual family event offers a safe evening of Halloween fun in a festive child-friendly atmosphere!  Children can wear their costumes and trick-or-treat along “Trunk-or-Treat Lane” (aka Main Street), going from vehicle trunk (or truck bed/van rear, etc.) to vehicle trunk gathering yummy treats. Hayrides, apple dunking and other “stuff” are in the works.

Participating vehicles can park and start decorating at 4:30 p.m. that afternoon.  Parking is first come, first serve, so get there early if you want a certain spot!  Folks without cars that want to set up a display and offer tricks and/or treats are welcome to set up on the boardwalks.  A number of the merchants will be open and offering additional goodies and warm drinks.

Residents, businesses and community groups are encouraged to join in the spooky fun by hosting a vehicle.  Decorate yourself as well as your car, truck, motorcycle or table… fill up those trunks or cauldrons then show up and join the fun.

For the comfort and safety of the children, no homemade treats are allowed and please keep decorations G/PG rated.  Although the Main Street Merchants are sponsoring the Trunk or Treat for the community, donations of all types, including fall decorations such as corn stalks, gourds, etc., and most importantly, individually wrapped candy, will be happily accepted!

For information and a free sign-up sheet contact Sierra Flowers at (209) 878-0349.
