Drowning Tragedy Avoided 

July 8, 2026 – Clovis Police Department officials report that one Clovis family’s Fourth of July almost ended in tragedy when their 4-year-old child was found at the bottom of their swimming pool during an afternoon BBQ. Just after 4:30 P.M. on July 4, Clovis Police officers responded with Clovis Fire and EMS to a home for a possible drowning.

Thankfully, a family member at the home knew CPR, and brought the child back to life before officers arrived. The child was transported to the hospital, and is recovering well, thanks to the quick actions of family, and the medical care they received.

Here are some helpful tips to remain safe while swimming this summer:

- Never let children swim unsupervised, regardless of their swimming ability.

- Learn CPR, because you never know who will need life-saving help.

- Designate someone to supervise everyone swimming, and limit your distractions.

- Swim sober.

- Keep safety and rescue equipment nearby.

- Ensure your children learn to swim.

- Swim with a buddy, never alone.

- Secure your pool with a fence and alarm.
