August 25, 2026 - Washington, D.C. — On Monday, Rep. Robert Garcia, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, released the following statement after the Supreme Court halted a lower court’s ruling that paused portions of President Trump’s executive order, which would effectively restrict mail-in voting ahead of the midterm elections. Trump’s executive order remains halted by a second injunction, in a lawsuit filed by the League of Women Voters and allied groups, and litigation continues.
“Let’s be clear: Donald Trump is a loser who can’t handle the fact that he was defeated in the 2020 election. He’s attacking vote by mail because he's afraid of losing the midterms, and because he wants to push conspiracy theories and bogus claims.
While the Trump Supreme Court has once again sided with the President, vote by mail is still protected under a different court order.
But there’s no question that Trump and his allies will continue their efforts to suppress the votes of the American people.
Oversight Democrats will continue fighting Trump’s efforts to disenfranchise voters and the USPS’s illegal and unconstitutional attempt to restrict voting by mail. We will not allow Donald Trump to use the Postal Service to interfere in our elections or make it harder for Americans to exercise their right to vote,” said Ranking Member Robert Garcia.
In July 2026, Ranking Members Garcia and Joe Morelle led 169 Members of Congress in sending a public comment letter to the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) urging the agency to reject its proposed rule restricting ballot mail in federal elections. In April 2026, Ranking Members Garcia and Morelle demanded the Postmaster General and the USPS Board of Governors oppose President Trump’s illegal Executive Order titled, Ensuring Citizenship Verification and Integrity in Federal Elections, which would restrict vote-by-mail and make it harder for eligible Americans to exercise their right to vote.
