The Mariposa County Library is looking for people who would like to share their love of reading and make a difference in someone’s life by volunteering as tutors in the Library’s adult literacy program.

Math tutors are also being sought.

A tutor training is scheduled for Thursday, November 3, 2016. Orientation for new tutors begins at 11 a.m., followed by the training, which will end about 4 p.m.  Lunch is provided.

Tutors must be 18 years old or older, be English speaking, have graduated from high school or earned a GED, and read at a 12th grade level or higher.

Tutors are trained to work with learners on a one-to-one basis. Learners work at their own pace to achieve goals they set for themselves. For example, if a learner wants to write a resume, pass a high school equivalency test, or become a U.S. citizen, instruction is directed toward achieving that goal.  All program materials are provided free of charge to learners. Hours are flexible to fit in with the tutors’ and learners’ individual schedules.

Mariposa County LibraryCounty Librarian Janet Chase-Williams says that the program… “has had a positive impact on all those participating, including the tutors and trainers.  Learners are achieving lifelong goals and tutors find that providing literacy education has been highly satisfying on a personal level. The community as a whole benefits from learners who are able to help themselves.”

For more information and an application, call the Mariposa Library, (209) 966-2140, email jggala@yahoo.com, or stop by the Library during normal hours of operation. Leave your name and phone number or e-mail address and the Literacy Coordinator will contact you.

The adult literacy program is funded in part by a grant from the California State Library. Other supporters include the Mariposa Rotary Club, Friends of the Mariposa Library and Sierra Telephone.
