September 10, 2026 - The California Medical Association (CMA) on Wednesday announced its opposition to Proposition 39, a November ballot measure that would restrict Californians’ ability to vote by imposing new requirements on voters.

CMA’s opposition is grounded in its recognition of voting as a social determinant of health. Civic participation helps shape the policies and community conditions that affect health, health equity and access to care. CMA is concerned Proposition 39 will create additional barriers for eligible voters, particularly those who already face obstacles to voting, including people with disabilities, naturalized citizens and historically underrepresented communities, including Latino, Black, young and low-income voters.

“Voting is more than a civic responsibility; it gives Californians a voice in the decisions that shape their communities and their health,” said CMA President René Bravo, M.D. “Proposition 39 would make the process of voting more complicated and create unnecessary barriers for eligible voters. Physicians see every day how the policies and conditions around our patients affect their health, and we should be making it easier, not harder, for people to participate in civic life.”
