Victim Attacked by Pack of Aggressive Dogs 

September 10, 2026 – Merced County Sheriff's Office officials report that at 8:53 a.m. on Wednesday morning, Deputies responded to the 4300 block of Cook St. in Le Grand for a report of a dog attack. Deputies located a 62-year-old male on the ground, surrounded by several aggressive dogs actively attacking him. As deputies attempted to get closer to the victim to provide medical aid, the dogs continued to display aggressive behavior and charged toward the deputies. A deputy fired three rounds at the dogs with his department-issued handgun striking two of the dogs. Because of the severity of their injuries, two of the dogs had to be euthanized at the scene. Animal Control Officers seized the two other dogs involved in the incident.

Deputies learned the victim was walking in front of a residence as the owner was putting their dogs away. The dogs got loose from the owner and began to attack the victim. The victim was provided medical aid and flown to a local area hospital with severe injuries to his head, face, arms, and legs. Our Detective Bureau is actively investigating this incident.

It is not only illegal but dangerous to allow your animal to roam around any public place unattended. Dogs must be on a leash and under the owner's immediate control. If dogs are left unattended in a backyard, owners are responsible for ensuring the fencing is in sufficient condition to confine the animals to the property. Dogs must also be confined in an enclosed area that allows plenty of exercise and access to shelter, food, and water.
