Fatal Traffic Collision – I Street and 14th Street
October 4, 2026 – Modesto Police Department officials report that they are providing the following information
regarding Friday’s fatal vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision near I Street and 14th Street.
The pedestrian has been identified as Jacob Moore, 35, of Modesto. The preliminary investigation indicates Moore was walking westbound on I Street approaching 14th Street when, for reasons still under investigation, he laid down in the roadway and covered himself with a blanket.
A westbound vehicle subsequently struck Moore, causing fatal injuries. The driver left the area following the collision.
Using city cameras and automated license plate reader technology, MPD’s Real Time Crime Center quickly identified and located the involved vehicle a short time later. An officer successfully deployed a tire-deflation device to stop the vehicle, and the driver was taken into custody without incident.
During the investigation, officers developed information indicating the driver may have been under the influence of drugs. Whether impairment was a factor in the collision remains under investigation. The driver was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in death or injury.
The cause and circumstances of the collision remain under investigation.
