Deputies Stop Growing Brush Fire on Mono Way

October 21, 2026 – Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office officials report that early in the morning of October 18, 2026, (TCSO) deputies were leaving the jail when they observed a large plume of smoke rising over Mono Way and immediately responded to investigate the source.

Deputies arrived and found a brush fire burning in dry grass along the railroad tracks near the Junction Shopping Center. The flames were spreading quickly toward nearby businesses and dangerously close to several propane tanks.

One deputy retrieved a fire extinguisher from his patrol vehicle, traversed the embankment, and suppressed the advancing flames before they reached the tanks.

Assisting deputies quickly established traffic control at nearby intersections, diverting traffic away from the hazard and ensuring open access for incoming fire vehicles. A passing motorist who had stopped to assist was contacted and safely directed out of the area.

Cal Fire and the Tuolumne County Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire and remaining hot spots.

Thanks to prompt interagency coordination, no injuries were reported, and surrounding commercial structures were protected.

We want to thank CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit and the Tuolumne County Fire Department for their quick response and partnership!
