November 4, 2026 - California Medical Association (CMA) President Jack Chou, M.D., issued the following statement
following the election of Xavier Becerra as California’s next governor:
"California's health care system is at a pivotal moment. Federal cuts to Medicaid under H.R. 1, growing financial pressures on providers and an increasingly strained health care safety net put access to care for millions of Californians at risk. Meeting these challenges will require leadership, a clear-eyed assessment of our health care system and a commitment to lasting solutions.
"With Becerra as governor, we have an opportunity to chart a course towards a stronger, more sustainable future for health care in California. Physicians stand ready to work with Governor-elect Becerra to identify opportunities to improve the efficiency of our health care system, make better use of existing resources and ensure health care dollars are directed to where they make the greatest difference: patient care.
"Together, we can build a health care system that protects access to care, supports the physicians who deliver it and provides a more sustainable foundation for the future. CMA looks forward to partnering with the Becerra administration to make that a reality."
