March 3, 2017 - At the upcoming Tuesday, March 7, 2017 Mariposa County Board of Supervisors meeting the Board will consider a Board Recognition item from District 3 Supervisor Marshall Long on a Proclamation Condemning the Tire Slashing that took place at Congressman Tom McClintock's Town Hall Meeting in Mariposa on February 21, 2017.

RECOMMENDATION AND JUSTIFICATION: Proclamation condemning the slashing of tires outside of Senator Tom McClintock's February 21, 2017, Town Hall meeting. (Supervisor Long)

BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF BOARD ACTIONS: The Board routinely approves proclamations in support of items. This is the first time that they will be approving a proclamation condemning an issue.

ALTERNATIVES AND CONSEQUENCES OF NEGATIVE ACTION: Do not approve, and miss the opportunity to highlight an important issue.


PROCLAMATION CONDEMNING THE SLASHING OF TIRES OUTSIDE OF SENATOR TOM McCLINTOCK’S FEBRUARY 21, 2017, TOWN HALL MEETING

WHEREAS, Congressman Tom McClintock represents the 4th District of California in which Mariposa County is situated; and

WHEREAS, Congressman McClintock held a Town Hall meeting at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, February 21st, 2017, to discuss the issues surrounding his district; and

WHEREAS, the event drew a large crowd of citizens representing multiple viewpoints; and WHEREAS, sometime during the evening, an unknown person or persons, who remain at large, slashed the tires of four vehicles in the parking lot; and

WHEREAS, the First Amendment of the United States Constitution guarantees the rights of freedom of speech, free press, the right to peaceably assemble, and the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances; and

WHEREAS, the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors collectively, and individually, wishes to voice their condemnation of any action which intimidates, or attempts to subdue, free speech under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT KNOWN that the Mariposa County Board of Supervisors, a political subdivision of the State of California, does hereby condemn the tire slashing that occurred during the Town Hall meeting on February 21, 2017, and stands firmly in support of the right of every citizen to avail themselves of all of their Constitutional rights including, but not limited to, freedom of speech, free press, the right to peaceably assemble, and the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
