The Mariposa County Arts Council Inc.'s Artists in the Schools program places trained teaching artists into all of Mariposa County’s 5th grade classrooms for 8-week residencies. Given the 5th-6th combination classroom at SFCS, both grade levels benefit from this special program. SFCS is working with visual artist Jackie Baxton this year. Ms. Baxton's curriculum explores three-dimensional artwork. She recently taught 5th and 6th graders how to use alginate to make hand molds. They had to wait overnight to unveil everyone’s hands. Students were overjoyed to see how they turned out. Students will also work on a sculpted model of their own hand during this program and at the same time, they'll have lessons about measurement/data, geometry, and anatomy/bone structure.
