April 6, 2017 - The CHP Oakhurst reports on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 3:00 P.M. John Costello, 26, of Bakersfield was driving a 2005 International truck southbound, south of Harmony Lane on Highway 49 at about 45 mph to 50 mph.

chp logoThe truck was carrying a load of tree rounds in a roll-off bin attached to the truck bed. Mr. Costello entered a sharp left turn in the roadway at a speed that was too fast to safely negotiate the turn.

The load of tree rounds shifted to the right causing the the load straps to break. The bin carrying the tree rounds detached and collided with a dirt embankment. The truck veered to the right and collided with the dirt embankment.  The truck came to a halt blocking both lanes of traffic and was leaking diesel fuel.

Both lanes of Highway 49 South were blocked for about forty five minutes as the area was declared a hazmat spill scene. One way traffic control was put in place to clean up about 45 gallons of diesel fuel as the Madera County Health Department approved the clean-up measures. CHP estimated the scene to cleared as of 12:00 A.M. Thursday.

Respondents to the scene included Caltrans and Madera County Fire.

Mr. Costello was not injured in the accident.
