Package Will Fix California Roads, Rail and the State Economy

For his part, Senator Cannella was successful in securing $400 million in funding for a commuter rail line that will connect his district to job centers, and a $100 million investment in an expressway connecting commercial and industrial areas through an integral part of Merced.

April 8, 2017 - SACRAMENTO – Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) was pleased to support Senate Bill 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. By any measure, canella anthony sal california senatorCalifornia has allowed its highways, roads and general transportation infrastructure to deteriorate, which has adverse effects on delivering products to market and commuting for its 39 million residents. The bill passed the Senate on a 27 - 11 vote.

“For over two years, I have fought for real solutions to California’s transportation problems,” said Senator Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres). “This state cannot continue to just put asphalt band aids on potholes when what we really need is major road and rail surgery to keep Californians and their economy moving. In addition, this will be transformative for commerce and commuter travel throughout the Central Valley.”

Senator Cannella mustered substantial political will to become the pivotal vote for Senate Bill 1 today, a comprehensive measure that will upgrade highways, local roads and rail throughout the state over the next 10 years.

Hundreds of statewide organizations, businesses and local governments voiced their support for the measure, including many in Senator Cannella’s district.

“We appreciate Senator Cannella’s leadership in working to fix California’s roads and transportation system throughout the Central Valley and the entire state.  The stable funding source outlined in SB 1 will provide critical benefits to California’s economy and our jobs climate,” said Allan Zaremberg, President and CEO, California Chamber of Commerce.

After decades of neglect, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 will invest billions in highway and local street repairs, fix crumbling bridges, and expand trade and commuter corridors.

The Central Valley, and other parts of Senator Cannella’s district, have suffered from unemployment more double that of the state and surrounding communities. SB 1 will bring jobs to his community and allow residents to more effectively commute to business hubs not only in the Central Valley, but the Bay Area.

For his part, Senator Cannella was successful in securing $400 million in funding for a commuter rail line that will connect his district to job centers, and a $100 million investment in an expressway connecting commercial and industrial areas through an integral part of Merced.

“This effort will certainly benefit the entire state by improving our dilapidated roadways, but my focus has always been ensuring my district is a participant in California’s growth,” Cannella continued.
