June 11, 2023 - San Bernardino County Sheriff Department officials report that on Saturday, June 3, 2023, a 53-year-old male was arrested for arson and booked into the Morongo jail. On Sunday, June 4, 2023, the male was transferred to the West Valley Detention Center. The male was placed alone in a holding cell, awaiting final housing assignment. At approximately 5:10 p.m., deputies found the male unconscious inside of the cell. Deputies and medical staff immediately rendered aid. The male was transported to a local hospital and later transferred to a nearby trauma center. The male was pronounced deceased on June 7, 2023.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division responded and are conducting the investigation. Release of the decedent’s identity is pending next of kin notification. No further information is currently available.
