Carjacking Suspect Arrested

June 24, 2023 - Riverside County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at 3:51 p.m., deputies spoke with a carjacking riverside county sheriff logovictim in the lobby of the Perris Station. The victim stated about 12:41 p.m., she was in her vehicle on the side of the road near Nuevo Road and Pico Avenue in Nuevo when an older white male adult, between 50-60 years old, walked up and pointed a silver handgun at her demanding her vehicle. The suspect drove away in the victim’s vehicle, leaving her at the side of the road. A police report was taken, and the license place of the victim’s vehicle was flagged as stolen.

On Thursday, June 22, 2023, about 2:15 p.m., deputies from the Perris Station received an alert of the stolen vehicle near Hwy 74 x Pico Avenue in Nuevo. Perris deputies located and stopped the vehicle near the 23000 block of Pico Avenue in Nuevo. The driver, Terry Chappell, a 71-year-old resident of Washington state, was detained and brought to the Perris Station. Chappell was positively identified as the suspect that stole the victim’s vehicle using a handgun. The victim’s vehicle was processed for evidence, but the handgun was not located. A records check revealed Chappell was a sex registrant out of Washington state, and he was in violation for failing to register with the local authorities. Chappell was later booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center for Carjacking, Possession of Stolen Property, and Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. This investigation is ongoing.
