July 12, 2023 - Alturas, CA - Modoc County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at approximately 8:55 P.M., Modoc County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to the 400 Blk., of Cressler Street in Cedarville, California for a man breaking windows out of a vehicle. While deputies were in route to the call, a second report came in that the same person, who was identified as 63-year-old Matthew Bradley Grover was armed with an axe and was involved in a physical fight. When deputies arrived on scene, they found Timothy Patrick Staton, age 60, suffering from a laceration to his chest which was reportedly caused by Grover striking Staton with the axe.

Grover was located at the scene in a travel trailer and taken into custody. He was booked into the Modoc County Jail and charged with attempted murder, battery with serious bodily injury, resisting arrest and vandalism. He is currently being held without bail.

The victim in this case was airlifted to an out of the area hospital for further treatment and has since been released.
