July 14, 2023 - El Dorado County Sheriff's Office officials issue a safety reminder as the weather heats up, it's time for some aquatic adventures! Please make sure you are practicing water safety.
Here are some important reminders to keep in mind:
- Be aware of the hazards of cold water. Even on a hot day, cold water can lead to hypothermia. Take gradual steps when entering and acclimate your body.
- Respect the power of river currents. Strong currents can easily overpower even the strongest swimmers. Avoid swimming alone in rivers and always check local conditions before diving in.
- Always wear a life jacket if you're not a confident swimmer. Safety first, no matter your age or skill level!
- Know your limits. Don't push yourself beyond your swimming abilities. Swim within your comfort zone.
- Avoid diving into unknown waters. Shallow water, submerged rocks, or other hidden hazards can cause serious injuries. Always check the depth and clarity of the water before taking the plunge.
- Supervise children closely. Keep a vigilant eye on the little ones near water, and remember that water can be dangerous even in shallow areas.
- Stay hydrated and protect yourself from the sun. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration, and don't forget to apply sunscreen regularly.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs. They impair judgment and coordination, making accidents more likely.
Make water safety a priority and have a fun and safe summer!
