Death Investigation - San Diego Central Jail
July 22, 2023 - San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials report that on July 20, 2023, Sheriff's Homicide investigators were notified 53-year-old Timothy Aaron Carlton, an individual in Sheriff's custody, passed away at around 7:30 p.m. Deputies located him unresponsive in his cell. Deputies and jail medical staff provided medical aid, including CPR, Naloxone, and an AED device, until relieved by the San Diego Fire Department. We extend our sympathies to the Carlton family and those affected by his death. A Sheriff's Family Liaison Officer will support the family as they deal with the loss of a loved one.
On May 2, 2023, Carlton was arrested by the El Cajon Police Department for an outstanding felony warrant, 148.9(A) PC- False ID to Specific PO's, 529(A) PC- False Personation of Another: Spec Circ, 11377(a) HS- Possession of Controlled Substance, and a PRCS Revocation. He was booked into San Diego Central Jail. Carlton resided in the city of El Cajon at the time of his arrest.
The Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) was notified of this incident.
As is the protocol for all in-custody deaths, the Sheriff's Homicide Unit will conduct a thorough investigation. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner's Office.
