July 25, 2023 - Ventura County Sheriff's Office officials report that Charles Smith, Ashley Aulston, and Daryl Boggan were involved in a crime spree in the city of Ventura County Sheriff logoCamarillo.  They were arrested after engaging deputies in a vehicle pursuit in the city of Thousand Oaks.

On July 17, 2023, between 2:58 P.M. and 4:36 P.M., deputies assigned to the Camarillo Police Station responded to three theft related calls for service from various locations in Camarillo. Two of these crimes were vehicle burglaries where the suspects smashed the window of the victim’s vehicle and stole property from inside.  The other crime was a grand theft from a retail department store at the Camarillo Premium Outlets.  In the grand theft investigation, the suspects stole over $4,000 in merchandise.

While the deputies were investigating these crimes, they determined there was a white Ford F150 involved in all of the crimes.  In one of these investigations, a concerned citizen saw a Ford F150 casing a parking lot.  The concerned citizen photographed the license plate and driver of the vehicle.  The concerned citizen shared these photographs with the investigating deputy.

Detectives with the Camarillo Investigations Bureau began looking into the registered owner of the Ford.  Using various investigative resources, detectives determined the Ford was displaying unreported stolen license plates out of Bakersfield.  At about 5:15 P.M., the Sheriff’s Communication Center obtained information the Ford was driving in the city of Thousand Oaks.  This information was broadcasted over the radio to patrol deputies.

Within eight minutes of the radio broadcast, deputies assigned to the Thousand Police Station located the Ford traveling northbound on SR 23 from the US 101 interchange.  Deputies initiated an enforcement stop on the Ford.  Rather than stopping, the Ford accelerated to reckless speeds, using all lanes of the freeway, including the shoulder, to evade the deputies.  Ventura County Copter 3 responded and provided overwatch of the pursuit.

The pursuit ended just before the Tierra Rejada Road offramp near Moorpark when the suspects veered off the freeway and drove up a dirt embankment.  The Ford became disabled when it collided with a chain link fence.  Charles Smith, Ashley Aulston, and Daryl Boggan were taken into custody.  There were no injuries reported during the pursuit, collision, and arrest of the suspects.

During a subsequent search of the Ford, deputies located a large quantity of suspected stolen property.  Among the items located, deputies recovered all the property stolen during the two vehicle burglaries and all the property stolen from the retail department store in Camarillo.  Deputies conducted a records check on the VIN of the Ford and determined it was reported as stolen out of Bakersfield.  All three suspects were arrested and booked at the Main Jail.

Charles Smith was arrested for three counts of PC 182(a)(1)- Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, two counts of PC 459- Vehicle Burglary, PC 487(a)- Grand Theft, VC 2800.2(a)- Evading an Officer with Willful Disregard, VC 10851(a)- Unlawful Taking of a Vehicle, and two felony warrants.  Smith is being held without bail and has a pending court date of 07/25/2023.

Ashley Aulston was arrested for three counts of PC 182(a)(1)- Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, two counts of PC 459- Vehicle Burglary, and PC 487(a)- Grand Theft.  Aulston’s bail was set at $150,000 and after her court date on 07/20/2023, she was released from custody.

Daryl Boggan was arrested for three counts of PC 182(a)(1)- Conspiracy to Commit a Crime, two counts of PC 459- Vehicle Burglary, PC 487(a)- Grand Theft, PC 3056- Parole Hold, and PC 466- Possession of Burglary Tools.  Smith is being held without bail and has a pending court date of 07/25/2023.
