August 10, 2023 - Monterey County Sheriff's Office officials report that on August 8, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the Monterey County Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call from a caller reporting there was a man in their home with a knife and then the phone call abruptly ended. 9-1-1 technology revealed the incident to be occurring at a residence in the 400 block of Hyland Drive, Salinas.
Multiple deputies responded to the scene at which time they contacted a male suspect armed with a knife. Thereafter the suspect was engaged and wounded by gunfire from deputies on scene. Emergency medical personnel responded to provide emergency assistance to the suspect who was pronounced deceased at the scene. No deputies were injured in the incident.
The Sheriff’s Office has requested the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office assume control of the investigation into the incident. At this time the Sheriff’s Office will have no further comment and will refer all media inquiries to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.
