September 9, 2023 - Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced on Thursday that a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Operations Assistant III, Meghan Capone, has been charged with illegally audio recording her colleagues’ conversations without their permission.

“Violating the law, especially as a government employee, is a serious breach of public trust,” District Attorney Gascón said. “Government employees are held to the highest standards of conduct and ethics. Defendant Capone’s alleged role in breaching the security and trust of her colleagues reflects a total disregard for the law. We must ensure that every individual, regardless of their role within a law enforcement agency, upholds the highest standards of professionalism and integrity."

Meghan Capone (43) is charged in case BA517594 with two felony counts of eavesdropping on confidential communications.

Capone is scheduled for arraignment on September 28 in Dept. 30 at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center.

Between March 2, 2021, and June 1, 2021, Capone, a civilian employee, allegedly recorded conversations of her colleagues in the Body Worn Camera Unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department without their permission.

An internal criminal investigation revealed that Capone allegedly used a small electronic voice-activated audio recording device plugged into her work computer. An external storage device also connected to Capone’s work computer allegedly contained audio files of private conversations between her superiors and their legal team.

If convicted on both charges, Capone faces up to three years and eight months in state prison.

This case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
