Robbery Investigation

September 25, 2023 - Riverside County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 5:52 p.m., deputies from the Lake Mathews Sheriff Station riverside county sheriff logoresponded to the 17000 block of Van Buren Boulevard in the unincorporated area of Woodcrest regarding a robbery. The female juvenile victim stated three Black male adults entered the store, selected numerous items, and began concealing them. As the female juvenile attempted to approach the suspects, one turned toward her and struck her, causing her to fall. The suspects fled the store and were seen entering a newer silver sedan waiting in the parking lot. As they fled the area, multiple witnesses stated the driver sped away at a high rate of speed, nearly striking several vehicles.

Due to the suspect’s erratic driving, he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a street sign and fence at the intersection of Van Buren Boulevard and Ranch Road. All suspects fled from the vehicle before deputies arrived. A perimeter was quickly established, and with assistance from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit and Riverside County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau K9 team, two suspects, 18-year-old Quin Taylor and 20-year-old Isaac Peevy, both residents of Moreno Valley, were quickly apprehended. During the investigation, the driver, who was positively identified as Deshawn Mency, a 20-year-old resident of Eastvale, later turned himself in at the Jurupa Valley Station. All three suspects were arrested and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for robbery.

A fourth suspect, Mahki Smith, a 19-year-old resident of Moreno Valley, is still outstanding. Deputies are currently working to locate and apprehend Smith.

This investigation is ongoing, and no additional details are available at this time. Anyone with information on this case is encouraged to call Deputy Denton at the Lake Mathews Station by calling 951-272-5600
