Exhibiting Weapon at Peace Officer, Resisting Arrest, Felony Warrant Arrest

November 21, 2023 - Riverside County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on November 20, 2023, at 10:28 a.m., deputies assigned to the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station responded to the 73000 block of El Paseo, Palm Desert, regarding checking the welfare of two subjects outside a business. 35-year-old Dexter McCluney and 35-year-old Jareca McCluney, both residents of Palm Desert, were at the location, and upset. Prior to arrival, deputies learned Dexter had an active felony warrant out of San Bernardino County. Upon contacting the couple, deputies noticed Jareca had a large dog on a leash. Deputies gave the couple instructions, but neither complied. Dexter then reached into his backpack and pulled out a large knife. Dexter stated he would not go to jail and started inflicting bodily harm on himself with the knife. Jareca refused to leave Dexter’s side.

Members of the Riverside County Crisis Negotiation Team and the Riverside County K9 Team responded to assist. After hours of negotiations, Jareca and their dog were ultimately removed from the scene. Less-lethal devices were deployed to gain compliance and Dexter was eventually taken into custody. Paramedics on scene rendered medical aid and Dexter was then transported to a local hospital with significant self-inflicted injuries. Dexter will be booked and charged for exhibiting a weapon at a peace officer, resisting arrest, and for his outstanding felony warrant. Jareca was booked in at the John Benoit Detention Center for resisting arrest.
