Update: Officer Involved Shooting - 4S Commons Drive 

December 16, 2023 - San Diego County Sheriff’s Department officials report that on December 7, 2023, at about 10:00 p.m., the San san diego county sheriff department logoDiego Police Department (SDPD) received information of a reported stolen vehicle, a prior domestic violence incident, and an unserved Emergency Protection Order (EPO). Through their investigation, they received information on the suspect, 46-year-old Curtis Harris, and that he was a felon known to carry a firearm. Harris was also a close distance to the residence of the protected party in the EPO. Around midnight, officers attempted to contact Harris in the shopping plaza in the 10500 block of 4S Commons Drive in San Diego. Harris was armed with a handgun and fired multiple rounds at different officers, striking a sergeant in the head. Another round struck a police vehicle. Harris' actions prompted three officers to discharge their firearms.

Multiple rounds struck Harris. He went to the ground and his loaded firearm was near him. Additionally, a loaded magazine was found on him. Officers rendered medical aid to Harris and he was transported to the hospital by paramedics. Harris was later pronounced deceased.

The sergeant has been identified as Sergeant Anthony Elliott and he is in stable condition and still receiving treatment. He has been on the department approximately 6 years. The officers have been identified as Officer Tanarat Crowe (approximately 1 year of service), Officer Darrion Talalele (approximately 10 months) and Officer Trevor Wright (approximately 1.5 years). They all work in the Northwestern Division.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved-shooting investigation.  At this stage of the investigation, the motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation. Detectives are currently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The investigation and review process for officer-involved shootings are extremely thorough. When the Homicide Unit completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any state criminal liability for their actions. The San Diego Police Department will conduct an administrative investigation into the officers’ discharge of their firearms.  The Commission on Police Practices (CPP) will conduct a review of the incident and provide any appropriate recommendations.
