Can You Spot a Text Scam?
January 9, 2024 - Orange County Sheriff's Department officials report that text messaging scams are an easy way for hackers to deploy malware onto your phone, giving them access to your personal information. Package delivery notifications, like the one pictured here, are rising in popularity, so it is important to be aware of them and know how to spot the scam.
Don’t ever click on links in a text message from senders reaching out to you unsolicited. In addition to package delivery schemes, messages promising free prizes, offering credit card deals or a plan to pay off student loans also are common scams.
You can stop some scam text messages by forwarding them to 7726 (SPAM), which will help your wireless provider block similar messages in the future. You can also report scam text messages to the Federal Trade Commission at: https://bit.ly/3uwa2LS.
