March 18, 2024 - Monterey County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on March 14, 2024, at about 9:02 p.m., Monterey County Sheriff's Deputies were patrolling the King City area as part of our ongoing efforts to assist the King City police as a result of the mass shooting that took place on March 3, 2024, where 11 people were injured, 4 fatally.
Officers stopped a vehicle in the area of San Antonio Drive and Campbell Avenue for multiple traffic violations. The driver was identified as 25-year-old Edgar Mejía Jr., of King City. The officers learned quickly that Mejía Jr. had an outstanding arrest warrant on charges related to domestic violence outside Tulare County.
During contact with Mejía Jr, he revealed to officers that he may have a firearm in his vehicle. Officers conducted a search of the vehicle and discovered a loaded and concealed firearm. Mejía Jr. was arrested without incident on his pending arrest warrant out of Tulare County for violation of 243(e)(1) PC, Domestic Assault; 25850(a) PC, Carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle and traffic related violations. He was booked into the Monterey County Jail and bond was set at $25,500.
The King City Police Department and the Monterey County Sheriff's Office have stepped up their patrolling efforts in the King City area since the March 3 mass shooting incident. This is the third gun taken off the streets in an 8-day period.
King City Police Chief James Hunt said, “I would like to express my continued gratitude to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office for providing additional patrols and assistance in making our community safer by getting wanted individuals and weapons off our streets.” This is helping us restore a sense of security and peace to our city.”
A $20,000 reward is offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the mass shooting that occurred on Sunday, March 3, 2024.
