Fontana Man Who Suffered Medical Emergency During Booking Process Later Pronounced Deceased at Hospital 

July 10, 2024 – San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials report that on Friday, July 5, 2024, at San Bernardino County Sheriff logoabout 11:57 p.m., deputies at the West Valley Detention Center attempted to process Joel Valenica after the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Fontana Station arrested him for a domestic disturbance. During the intake process, Valencia became erratic and upon medical evaluation, it was discovered his heart rate was elevated and he required transportation to the hospital.  

On Saturday, July 6, 2024, when Valencia arrived at the hospital, he became combative and suffered a medical emergency. Hospital staff attempted lifesaving measures; however, Valencia was pronounced deceased. 

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division responded and assumed the investigation. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
