Update on Escaped Inmate, Caleb Duerr

October 1, 2024 – Plumas County Sheriff’s Office officials report that on September 27th, at approximately 8:15 a.m., it was reported Plumas County Inmate Caleb Lee Duerr, escaped from the Plumas County Jail from the inclement yard. Duerr was able to manipulate two fenced areas and flee to the O’Reily’s Auto parts store. Once there, he was able to immediately get a ride from a subject who was at the store. Duerr, per the man who gave him a ride, was dropped off at Highway 70 and County Road A-23 near Beckwourth. He was last seen walking Southbound on A-23 near the gravel pits between approximately 9:30 A.M. and 10:00 A.M.

The Sheriff’s Office personnel called in all available staff to assist in locating Duerr. At 8:35 A.M., The Plumas Unified School District was notified of the escape and the Sheriff’s Office began calling allied agencies for the use of the K-9 units and air ops in an effort to locate Duerr. The Sheriff’s Office staff then began sending out notifications to the public of the escaped inmate. Once the notification went out, the Sheriff’s Office received several reports of seeing Duerr in various areas between Quincy and Portola. Patrol staff responded to these potential sightings, however all proved to be misidentification and not Caleb Duerr.

The K-9 units did not pick up a scent in the area of A-23 and air-ops were not successful. Units from Plumas, Sierra, Butte and Yuba Counties, California Highway Patrol and the United States Forest Service along with air ops from the CHP and Washoe County continued to search for Duerr throughout the day with negative results. Since then, The Sheriff’s Office has been working with multiple agencies at the county, state and federal levels in effort to locate and apprehend Caleb Duerr.

Since his escape, Duerr has made contact with individuals by email suggesting he has either obtained a phone or access to a computer with internet service. Please see the attached photos of Caleb Duerr. If any public member has contact or a sighting of Caleb Duerr, please contact the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office at 530-283-6300 or 9-1-1.
