January 14, 2025 – San Diego County Sheriff's Office officials are releasing details following the death
of a 68-year-old man, Donell Duckett, who was in custody at the San Diego Central Jail. On January 10, 2025, at approximately 4:10 a.m., Sheriff's Homicide investigators were informed of Mr. Duckett's passing at a local hospital.
On January 10, 2025, around 1:09 a.m., medical staff conducting routine hourly rounds discovered Mr. Duckett in his cell showing signs of medical distress. Medical personnel, supported by deputies and a medical doctor, promptly evaluated his condition and determined the need for hospital transport. During transport preparations, Mr. Duckett became unresponsive, and CPR was initiated. Despite these life saving measures, Mr. Duckett was pronounced deceased at the hospital at 4:02 a.m.
An autopsy conducted by the Medical Examiner's Office on January 11, 2025, identified the cause of death as cardiovascular disease, cerebral disease, hypertensive conditions, end-stage renal disease, and atherosclerosis. The death was classified as natural.
Mr. Duckett, who identified as homeless, had been in custody since July 8, 2024, facing charges related to transportation, sales, and possession of controlled substances. Due to his chronic medical conditions and treatment refusal, he was housed in the Medical Observation Unit.
The Sheriff's Department has assigned a Family Liaison Officer to provide support to Mr. Duckett's family during this difficult time. The Sheriff's Homicide Unit is overseeing a thorough investigation to ensure all aspects of the incident are examined with complete transparency.
We extend our deepest condolences to Mr. Duckett’s family and are committed to keeping them informed throughout the investigation process.
