Disaster Relief Fraud Warning & Advisement
January 16, 2025 – Los Angeles Police Department officials announce that as wildfires ravage Los Angeles, causing widespread devastation to families and communities, a new threat of Fraud targeting those already suffering, or those trying to help. If you reside in or near the affected communities, or if you are a relief worker conducting business in the fire disaster areas, please be vigilant and avoid becoming a victim of scams by following the important steps below.
If something does not seem right, hang up the phone or tell the representative in person to leave and return later. Do not click any links sent by text message or e-mail even from a source you may recognize. Verify agency credentials or information through a known source. Legitimate agencies will never pressure you to act immediately, pay using gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, or request your social security number on the spot. FEMA does not charge for access to benefits and will not require your checking account number for services. If you think you have been a victim of identity theft or fraud, contact your local Police Department to make a report.
