Update: SDPD Officer Involved Shooting - E St., San Diego 

January 17, 2025 – San Diego County Sheriff's Office officials report that on the evening of January 13, 2025, at san diego county sheriff department logoapproximately 6:54 p.m., officers from the San Diego Police Department's Central Division responded to an emergency call regarding a suicidal male at an apartment complex located at 1150 E St., San Diego. Upon arrival, officers were informed by the caller that his roommate had attempted suicide using a knife.

Two officers arrived on scene two minutes later and made their way to the apartment. Once at the apartment, the officers safely escorted 6 other subjects out of the apartment. While waiting for additional officers to arrive, the suicidal subject confronted the officers inside the apartment. The subject was holding a knife while quickly approaching the officers. The officers commanded the individual to drop the knife, and when he refused to comply and continued advancing towards them, the two SDPD officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect.

Officers immediately began life saving measures until relieved by paramedics from the San Diego Fire Department. The subject was transported to a local hospital where unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. No officers were injured in the incident.

The officers involved in the shooting have been identified as Officer Gavin Isa and Officer Eric Moreno. They both have been employed by San Diego Police Department for four and a half years and are assigned to Central Division Patrol.  

The suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Andrew Christian Engel, from San Diego.

Per the Countywide Memorandum of Understanding, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit was called to the scene to conduct the officer-involved-shooting investigation.  At this stage of the investigation, the motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation. Detectives are currently gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The investigation and review process for officer-involved shootings are extremely thorough. When the Homicide Unit completes its investigation, it will be reviewed by the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to determine if the officers bear any criminal liability for their actions. The San Diego Police Department will conduct an administrative investigation into the officer’s discharge of his firearm.
