Officer-Involved Shooting on Watt Ave.

September 19, 2026 – Sacramento County Sheriff's Office officials report that on Friday, September 18, 2026, at approximately 5:20 a.m., the Sheriff’s Communications Center received a report of a possible vehicle burglary in progress on the 5700 block of Hesper Way. The caller was at work when she observed an adult male on her home surveillance system who appeared to be burglarizing her husband’s vehicle. She called to alert her husband, who was at the residence, then called 911.

When the husband confronted the suspect, the suspect physically attacked him. The husband attempted to retreat into his residence, but the suspect pursued him and attacked again before he could get inside. The suspect stole the victim’s keys and fled in the victim’s vehicle.

Deputies located the stolen vehicle near Manzanita Avenue and Madison Avenue and attempted a traffic stop. The suspect refused to yield, and deputies initiated a vehicle pursuit. Deputies initially attempted a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver, but it was unsuccessful. The pursuit continued until deputies deployed a tire-deflation device and then successfully conducted a PIT maneuver on southbound Watt Ave., just south of Edison Ave.

After the vehicle stopped, deputies exited their patrol vehicles and commanded the suspect to surrender. The suspect was able to restart the stolen vehicle and drove northbound in the southbound lanes. He then rapidly accelerated across the center median and drove directly toward deputies who were on foot, outside their patrol vehicles. The suspect’s actions created an immediate threat to the deputies’ lives, and two deputies fired their duty weapons at the suspect.

The vehicle came to a stop, and deputies removed the suspect without further incident. After determining he had been struck by gunfire, deputies immediately began providing medical aid. The suspect was transported to a local hospital, where his condition is listed as non-life-threatening. The carjacking victim was treated and released from a local area hospital. No deputies were injured.
