Fire is burning in mixed conifer, Pinyon-Juniper and brush fuel types with high rates of spread. Crowning, torching, and running fire behavior. Short and mid-range spotting is prolific in lower elevation fuels.

Outlook

Planned Actions

Branch I - Hold fire south of China Spring. Secure Hwy 395 slopover. Secure structures along Hwy 395, Topaz Ranch Estates, and Smith Valley.

Branch II - continue to scout indirect Line opportunities from Leviathan Peak west to Q/T break.

Branch III - Hold fire south of Hwy 88. Secure structures in Crystal Springs. Hold fire east of Rocky Spine Ridge.

Structure - Secure structures along Hwy 395, Spring Valley, and Holbrook.

Night Operations - Patrol and secure structures along Hwy 88 and Hwy 395. Conduct firing operations as conditions allow (BR I and III).

Projected Incident Activity

12 hours: Very active to extreme fire behavior. High rates of spread with torching and spotting associated with brush and Pinyon-Juniper fuel types.

24 hours: Continued extreme to active fire behavior. Fire spread primarily to the East.

Update 2:35 P.M. Per Caltrans: Road closures remain in place: - SR 89 is closed. - U.S. 395 is closed to through traffic at Sonora Junction - Vehicles can still access Coleville & Walker - Nevada-bound traffic can detour on SR 182

Outlook

Planned Actions

Branch I (northeast side of fire) - Secure line in DIV K, finish prep on dozerline in K south of China Springs Youth Camp. Prepare for burnout and structure protection along US Highway 395. Identify contingency east of Highway 395 and secure major spot fire east of the highway.

Branch II (south side of fire) - continue to scout indirect Line opportunities.

Branch III (west side of fire) - Prep and hold Highway 88 and Crystal Springs area. Scout opportunities from Hawkins communication site to A/F Division break.

Structure - Continue to assess and prep structures along US Highway 395. Mop up and secure around structures in Woodfords, Grover Hot Springs, and Markleeville areas.

Projected Incident Activity

12 hours: Poor humidity recovery will result in continued very active to extreme fire behavior into the evening hours. High rates of spread with torching and spotting associated with both running and backing fire.

24 hours: Burning conditions expected to be similar to Thursday with continued extreme to active fire behavior. Fire spread primarily to the North and East.
