August 17, 2021 - The US Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program Smoke Outlook for the Monument Fire for Tuesday.
Fire: The McFarland Fire nearly doubled in size to 97,407 acres, still 68% contained, while the Monument Fire is now 119,280 acres and 10% contained. Both fires made a huge push towards the southeast with the northwest winds, and teams are once again expecting active fire today. Later tonight, when the winds shift to the north and northeast, there will be a Fire Weather Watch (McFarland) and a Red Flag Warning (Monument) in effect.
Smoke: Yesterday, smoke from the fires drifted into the north end of the Sacramento Valley about midday and stayed through the night - we are still seeing elevated concentrations that will likely stay most of the morning. To the west, air quality will remain clear for now, but as winds shift to the north and then the northeast tonight, we will start to see smoke from fires to the north of our reporting area, and communities to the south will start to see more smoke impacts than before.
