August 25, 2021 - The US Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program Smoke Outlook for the Caldor Fire for Wednesday.
Special Statement: Transport winds are forecasted to shift tomorrow. This may bring minor improvement to air quality in the Tahoe Basin late in the day.
Fire: The Caldor fire is now 126,182 acres, with 11% containment. Fire behavior is expected to be similar to yesterday with potential for spotting up to .5 mile.
Smoke: Winds and smoke transport will be dominated by terrain and diurnal patterns again today; however, the Southerly flow we've been seeing in the morning will linger a bit longer today. Expect smoke to transport over the sierra crest to the E/NE during the day and drain back to the W/SW down the American and Cosumnes drainages in the evening/overnight. Those in Grass Valley, Placerville, and Auburn should see conditions improve to the Moderate level by 4:00 p.m., so consider planning your outdoor activities in the evening, before conditions degrade overnight. Those in the South Lake Tahoe can generally expect the lowest PM 2.5 concentrations in the early morning, before conditions worsen around noon as fire activity and smoke transport increases. Those in Tahoe City, Truckee, and Reno can expect a brief improvement, albeit into the Unhealthy range, in evening.
Health and Safety: Take it easier during smoky times to reduce how much smoke you inhale. If it looks or smells smoky outside, avoid strenuous activities such as mowing the lawn or going for a run. Reduce Your Exposure
