7:00 P.M. DIXIE FIRE EAST ZONE OPERATIONAL UPDATE

Taylorsville was in extensive mop up today and there were no new spots. Some of the crews were repositioned today to go up on the ridge to prep the dozer line behind town. Firefighters will continue to prep and widen the dozer line.

There was a slop over the western edge of the Grizzly spot near the top of the peak. While the Feather River Hotshots tried to hold it, the fire behavior forced them to retreat, and aircraft continued to try to cool it down and stop the spread. On Grizzly Ridge they are expecting additional spotting tomorrow as well, especially into the drainages which may make runs to the ridge top.

Fire managers are shifting resources to assist in Taylorsville and on Grizzly Ridge. Mop up will continue in the Peter’s Creek area, as will structure protection in Wards Creek and Grizzly Creek. Work on alternative contingency lines will continue to protect Davis Lake and other communities directly south. Work continues to secure line at Antelope Lake and Dyer Mountain.

The weather is forecasted to make a switch from terrain driven, to NE 5-10 mph with gusts to 15mph. Everything will remain dry with single digit humidity which will make more fuels readily available to burn.

4:45 P.M. DIXIE FIRE EAST ZONE OPERATIONAL UPDATE

Activity on the Dixie Fire East Zone picked up this afternoon. Aggressive mop-up has continued throughout the day in Taylorsville - there were no new spots. Another spot went west of the Grizzly spot fire and crews and aviation have been working to hold the western edge. Down Grizzly Ridge, firefighters have been pre-treating the dozer line with retardant to discourage fire from moving over the ridge to the southwest.

Work continued on a contingency line south of the Grizzly spot fire, put in place to keep the fire from hooking around to the west and coming back around to impact Taylorsville. Two other lines to protect communities to the south are complete and a third is being worked on. The dozer line around the Greenhorn Subdivision was completed, with the help of local fire departments, and more old dozer lines are being opened from the Claremont Fire in 2020. There will be a swing shift tonight to ensure a surge of resources to hold and continue today’s progress.

1:15 P.M. DIXIE FIRE EAST ZONE OPERATIONAL UPDATE

Work continues in the Taylorsville area today where last night's strategic firing is still holding well. Firefighters are doing aggressive mop up and watching for spots coming off the hill but so far, no new spots. Operations reports structure protection and mop up is holding well in the Genesee Valley as well. The recent evacuation warnings sent out for areas southeast of the Grizzly spot fire were not triggered by anything on the fire. They were merely to get people ready in case a mandatory was ever required. All the dozer lines, down Grizzly Ridge and SE of the ridge between the fire and towns in that area, are complete and continue to be improved.

9:45 A.M. DIXIE FIRE EAST ZONE OPERATIONAL UPDATE

In the Bears Creek, Wards Creek and Little Grizzly Creek areas, firefighters are engaged in defense in and around structures. The fire up on Mt Jura above Taylorsville fire is down to the Genesee Valley and firefighters are actively mopping it up.

The Grizzly and Peel Ridge spot fires are burning as one fire and moving to the southeast. The fire has lots of fuel because in that area, the timber has no fire history. On the west side of the spot, firefighters have kept it pinned into a ravine. A spot on the other side of the drainage got picked up with a timely retardant drop. The west side of the Grizzly spot is in a bad area and may create an issue as firefighters determine what to do with the western flank. However, in the meantime, they are diligently working that portion of line.

Prep on the contingency lines up on Grizzly Ridge and southwest, will continue. A lot of work has been completed with the help of fire departments from Greenhorn, Cromberg and Quincy.

Patrol and mop up continue in Indian Valley as well as on Mt. Dyer where firefighters are still working a small wedge of heavy dead and down that will take time to secure.

August 26, 2021 - Here are the operational updates for the Dixie Fire from the Lassen National Forest for Thursday, August 26, 2021.  This page will be updated.

7:00 A.M. DIXIE FIRE EAST ZONE OPERATIONAL UPDATE

Overnight, Diamond Mountain and Talac Hotshot crews took advantage of favorable winds and weather and continued to work the fire down off Mt. Jura to the valley bottom to secure Taylorsville. While the pictures look dramatic USFS logobecause of the darkness, the process was completed slowly and methodically and followed up by aggressive mop-up of heavy materials along the fire’s edge to reduce spotting. No spots have occurred. Today resources will focus on holding this line.

Firefighters were also actively engaged in structure protection in the Genesee Valley near Ward Creek and Little Grizzly Creek as the Peel Ridge spot backed down into the valley and they will continue this work today. Structure preparations were completed in the Five Bears/Ward Creek area.

Hand crews and aircraft worked the western edge of the Grizzly spot late yesterday, and kept it from moving west, but it continues to move mostly to the east. Significant progress was made on the contingency lines down Grizzly Ridge to the southeast to protect communities south such as Greenhorn and Quincy.

Additional work was also carried out in Peters Creek to remove a pocket of unburned fuel to secure the line north of Taylorsville while crews patrolled and moped-up throughout Indian Valley. In the Dyer Mountain area, firefighters continue to work at removing the concentration of heat near the line in Second Water Trough Creek. Heavy equipment and crews are working to secure the spot fire near Antelope Lake.
