August 27, 2021 - Lassen and Plumas National Forests - The Grizzly spot fire reached the top of Grizzly Ridge, and firefighters are working down the ridge with it to the south, burning as necessary to keep it from moving to the west. This will continue today. There was a slop over on the western edge of the Grizzly spot near the top of the ridge yesterday. While the Hotshots tried to hold it, the fire behavior forced them to reposition. Lines continue to be constructed and improved to protect Taylorsville from the Grizzly spot. Aircraft will continue to work at slowing the movement of this spot using both water and retardant as air quality allows. The fire backing down Mt. Jura to the east of Taylorsville has reached the bottom of the valley, the lines have held, and crews will continue to mop up today aggressively. Multiple contingency lines have been constructed between Grizzly Ridge and Quincy and Greenhorn. Equipment is also working north of Davis Lake on contingency lines.
The fire by Janesville and Milford has not seen a change in its footprint. Although smoke continues to be seen, it is well interior. There was also progress made on the areas in the vicinity of Antelope Lake. Along Genesee Valley Road, crews continue to find and extinguish spot fires thrown from the Grizzly spot. Around Dyer Mtn. work continues to mop up heat concentrations. There has been no movement along the Fruit Growers Blvd. Out towards Storrie, tactical mop up continues. Winds today will be light and from the northeast at first, switching to the northwest later in the day. It will be mid-afternoon before the inversion lifts. Relative humidity continues to be very low.
Dixie Fire West Zone: Light winds along with the start of a warming trend are expected on Friday. Temperatures are forecasted to be above normal through the weekend with poor overnight recoveries and possible single digit RH values. An increase in fire behavior is anticipated with this forecasted hot and dry weather.
Certain evacuation orders have been reduced to warnings and certain warnings have been lifted allowing some residents to return to their homes and businesses. Returning residents are strongly encouraged to stay vigilant with regard to current fire conditions. Residents may see smoke coming from trees and stumps for days following their return. Residents are encouraged to call 911 if they are concerned about any active flames near their homes or businesses rather than attempting to deal with such flames themselves.
Northern California has experienced large fire activity and will likely experience an extended fire season. Fires burning in northern California are exhibiting extreme fire growth based on critical fuel conditions. The prioritization of resources is always based on life, property, and natural resources. Under these drought conditions, wildfires are burning rapidly with extreme severity and have traveled up to 8 miles in a single day. Fuel conditions are much worse than previous years and along with wind is causing much greater fire spread. Firefighters are experiencing conditions never seen before, such as increased spread rates, spotting and active nighttime burning. We coordinate very closely with the US Forest Service and CalOES for our local and out of state partners, to ensure resource availability.
